The 3d Infantry Regiment is the oldest active duty regiment in the U.S. Army and is appropriately known as The Old Guard. The regiment has provided security and Presidential escort service in the nations capital since World War II, though it got its name in 1847 after winning a campaign during the Mexican War. After serving in nearly every American war and crisis since the War of 1812, The Old Guard continues to serve its country and capital city through many special platoons and units with very noble duties. Some of these platoons include the Honor Guard which provides funeral escorts at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as round-the-clock watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, and the U.S. Drill Team which performs for many different groups and shows off its unique set of skills in the name of the U.S. Army.

Presidential Salute Battery (PSB), HHC 1/3 Infantry Regiment

The battery team performs at special occasions throughout our nations capital, including the visits of foreign dignitaries and honoring the U.S. President through cannon salutes. This platoon is made up of a staff of five soldiers plus two soldiers on each of the 10 M5, 75mm cannons atop the M6 Howitzer carriages. This is the only platoon of its kind in the U.S. Army.

Tomb of the Unknown, 4/3 Infantry Division

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery is constantly protected and honored by select Honor Guard soldiers as a part of this specialty platoon stationed at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. Soldiers have been guarding the tombs since the unknown soldiers were placed in their eternal sarcophagi and a ceremony was performed by President Harding in 1921.

US Drill Team

The U.S. Drill Team performs for both government and non-government parties with 1903 Springfield rifles in a 60 ft by 80 ft space and a group of 19 expertly trained soldiers. The purpose of their rigorous training and highly in-sync performances encourage recruiting and to show-off the U.S. Army's skills to other governments and outside groups. These soldiers exemplify what it means to work as a team and personify the phrase "practice makes perfect".
